Astros broadcaster gets fresh start at 78

Fifty years after he broke into the big leagues as one of Major League Baseball's first Spanish-language radio announcers, Rene Cardenas makes his U.S. television play-by-play debut today as the Astros and FSN Houston launch a 15-game schedule of Spanish broadcasts to air in Houston and across South Texas.

While at least eight other major league teams provide Spanish audio on TV broadcasts via secondary audio program services, the Astros apparently will be the only team with a stand-alone Spanish broadcast featuring dedicated cameras and Spanish-language graphics separate from the English-language broadcasts.

Cardenas and Raul Saenz will call the games on Comcast's channel 76, on DirecTV and Dish Network and on cable systems in 21 Texas markets, including Austin, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Bryan-College Station, Corpus Christi, El Paso and San Antonio.

For Cardenas, 78, tonight's
broadcast represents the culmination of a long-standing dream to return to the airwaves in Houston, his home for most of the last 50 years. After a decade of lobbying for the Astros to expand their Spanish broadcasts beyond radio and SAP, he finds that reality has exceeded his expectations.

"This is something very special, very important," he said. "This is a first, the way they have structured it for us with special cameras. I don't think there is anything like this at any other ballclub."

Astros executive Jay Lucas said Cardenas was selected for the broadcasts because of his knowledge of the team. He has written for La Prensa for the last half-century, writes for Astros publications and the team's Web site and did some games on radio last year.

"We're very excited about doing these games," said Steve Tello, general manager of FSN Houston. "We're doing 15, and we'll evaluate at the end of the season to see what viewership was like and what sponsorship was like, and we'll consider expanding it next season. We're hoping for good interest."

Cardenas broke into broadcasting in his native Nicaragua and came to the United States in 1951. When the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958, he was hired as Vin Scully's Spanish-language counterpart.

He came to Texas in 1961, when Judge Roy Hofheinz hired him to call games in Spanish for his expansion Colt .45s and other sports events after the Astrodome opened in 1965.

"He's one of the true pioneers in the business," said Alex Trevino, a member of the Astros' Spanish radio team.

Along the way, Cardenas helped establish a unique style for Spanish-language baseball on U.S. radio.

"It is a different style of broadcasting," he said. "We like to make a big production out of it. We use words with sound and feeling and try to add history and poetry to make it sound beautiful. We consider a baseball broadcast a romantic project."

Cardenas returned in the mid-1970s to Nicaragua, where he called games on TV and radio. However, as the grandson of a former Nicaraguan president, he ran afoul of the ruling Sandinista regime and returned in 1980 to the U.S. He called games for the Rangers in 1981 before returning to Los Angeles from 1982 through 1998.

He has made his offseason home in Houston since the early 1960s, with the exception of his brief return to Nicaragua. And now he has a chance to return to the airwaves as a pioneer in yet another segment of Spanish broadcasting.

"I just wanted the secondary audio job, but what the Astros are doing is completely out of my thinking," Cardenas said. "It is very special."

The Spanish-language schedule includes games tonight and Thursday against the Nationals, four games later this month and games each month the rest of the season.

Los Astros hacen historia; nombraron a René Cárdenas narrador oficial de televisión.

Fanáticos del Mundo: En mi carácter de Editor de “La Estufa Caliente” muy pocas veces escribo para ustedes, los amables lectores de este ya popularísimo sitio cibernético, porque la información actualizada que transmiten los elocuentes y experimentados especialistas del béisbol no debe ser interrumpida por mí.

En esta ocasión, sin embargo, las circunstancias obligan.  La alegría espontánea y el gozo inmensurable que a todos seguramente nos envuelve la noticia de que al creador e inspiración diaria de este sitio del Internet, dedicado al deporte rey, René Cárdenas, le piden que por favor salga del retiro auto-impuesto y que vuelva a brillar como grande que es, entre las luminarias del micrófono, es de suyo envolvente.

Sí, los Astros de Houston, han decidido escribir historia y han solicitado a René que inicie las transmisiones en vivo, por televisión, en español, llevando jugada por jugada las incidencias de los principales juegos de los Astros de Houston desde el Minute Maid Park, uno de los estadios de baseball más modernos de las Grandes Ligas. 

Desde el 7 de Mayo, 2008, René Cárdenas, de posicionamiento mundial en el béisbol de Grandes Ligas por conquista propia, deleita nuevamente desde el palco de transmisión a la fanaticada.  Con sus descripciones amenas y positivas entrega las incidencias del momento en los juegos más relevantes de los Astros de Houston en esta temporada.

Todos los que de una forma u otra estamos ligados a “La Estufa Caliente” nos encontramos de pláceme, porque René Cárdenas cuya valía inmensa es reconocida en el mundo de las Grandes Ligas, vuelve con la acuciosidad y caballerosidad que le caracteriza para hacer vibrar de entusiasmo, esta vez a los televidentes, a los que ahora podrán ya sintonizar la transmisión de video, sin necesidad de bajarle el volumen para a la vez sintonizar la radio, pues el maestro de muchos otros locutores deportivos, estará dándoles las anécdotas apropiadas a la jugada del momento mientras disfrutan a la vez de las escenas en vivo del juego que se desarrolla.

Desde la oficina editorial de “La Estufa Caliente” les hago llegar la seguridad de nuestro regocijo, el que se engrandece al leer todos los correos electrónicos que desde el 29 de Abril de 2008 hemos estado recibiendo desde muchos lugares del mundo, felicitando a René por el siguiente peldaño alcanzado en su ya larga y fructífera carrera. 

Me atrevo a decir que ahora solo nos falta que se haga justicia y que pronto veamos a René exaltado al Salón de la Fama del béisbol, reconocimiento y honor que ya debió haberse hecho hace muchos años.  Ahora, con las conquistas innegables logradas por René, tenemos mayores razones de peso para volver a insistir ante las autoridades de esa casa excelsa del béisbol y reclamar para el singular René, el reconocimiento adicional que hace falta para terminar de coronar una carrera limpia, entregada a la actividad que promueve la bienandanza de las juventudes, el béisbol. 

No duden que cuando llegue el momento más apropiado, yo les volveré a escribir, no con el deseo de distraerlos de los artículos que más les interesan, como son los enfocados al deporte rey, sino para pedirles que me ayuden a engrosar una campaña que deseo iniciar en el futuro no lejano para que juntos llevemos a René Cárdenas, a las salas augustas del Salón de la Fama del Béisbol de las Ligas Mayores.
